Since joining academia, she has published a series of IEEE/ACM papers on security designs and solutions for softwarized networks based on her research on the development of network security architectures and security functions for emerging networks. She began her career in industry and became a Chartered Engineer in 2006 having worked as a Systems Engineer and Engineering Group Leader with Airbus. Sandra Scott-Hayward is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) with the School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and a Member of the Centre for Secure Information Technologies at Queen’s University Belfast (QUB). The adversarial exploit is an attacker modifying the network behaviour by altering the forwarding behaviour of the switches while attempting to hide their violation(s) of the network policy. In this talk, I will discuss DNSxP, our DNS data exfiltration protection architecture that uses SDN and data plane programmability (DPP), and adversarial exploitation of P4 data planes. This is driven by open-source and programmable devices that offer high performance and custom packet processing.

While software-defined networking (SDN) has revolutionised networking by making control plane programmability a reality, in recent years, there has been a renewed interest in data plane programmability. Group: Systems Seminars Speaker: Sandra Scott-Hayward, Queen's University, Belfast Date: 09 November, 2021 Security aspects of data plane programmability Jo Kristian Bergum works as a distinguished engineer at Yahoo, working primarily on the open source Vespa.ai big data serving engine. We also touch on real world application constraints, search result diversification, and how serving search over static research document collections differs from real world search applications. Vespa also allows expressing the end-to-end multi-stage retrieval and ranking pipeline, including inference using transformer models. We dive into Vespa’s implementations of sub-linear retrieval algorithms for both sparse and dense representations to produce candidate documents for (re-)ranking efficiently. This talk gives an overview of the Vespa search serving architecture and features enabling expressing state-of-the-art retrieval and ranking methods. However, the open-source serving engine Vespa, which Yahoo has developed since 2003, offers features that enable implementing state-of-the-art retrieval and ranking methods using a single serving engine which reduces the deployment complexity and failure modes significantly. It requires substantial middleware glue and deployment effort to connect open-source tools like Apache Lucene, vector search libraries (e.g. Search is going through a paradigm shift, sometimes referred to as the “BERT revolution.” The introduction of pre-trained language transformer models like BERT has brought significant advancements in search and document ranking state-of-the-art.īringing these promising methods to production in an end-to-end search serving system is not trivial.

The parser also recognizes coordinating conjunctions and captures negation in text, a feature usually ignored by others. The automata are based on closed-class English words and model generic relations not limited to specific words. Cascaded finite state automata structure the relations between individual entities. It uses heuristics and a noun phraser to capture entities of interest in the text.

A shallow parser that captures the relations between noun phrases automatically from free text has been developed and evaluated. These entities and relations are usually pre-specified entities, e.g., proteins, and pre-specified relations, e.g., inhibit relations.
